Thank you for taking the time to read this post, the first of many by Food, Equity, Equality and Democracy or FEED. FEED was created with a simple, albeit worthy and monumental mission, to create a fairer, more equal food system in South Africa. When we speak of the food system, we are talking about all the people, processes and infrastructure that is involved in feeding our country.
We started FEED in 2020, after seeing the need for an organisation that could look at the entire food system rather than at one component of it. This after both myself and my co-founder Nicola Coundourakis had spent many years working on various projects in the food system and realised that many of the issues faced were systemic issues, rather than issues with individual projects, issues that those projects could not hope to address on their own.
We realised that much more cooperation and collaboration was required to address those issues, so that we could learn from each other’s successes and not repeat the failures, so that we could bring together the best people and organisations to address systemic issues and so that we could spread valuable information far and wide as quickly as possible.
In the coming weeks and months, we will talk more about our history and beginnings, about what the food system is, our vision and mission and our approach in addressing issues; we will also share our views on a number of topics of interest in the food system. And we will share news about the interventions we are making in the food system, and how farmers, organisations, funders etc. can get involved.
Follow us here and on our various social media channels to keep abreast of our Viewpoints. We look forward to hearing about you and your projects.
Welcome to FEED!
