Food Equity, Equality and Democracy
There is enough food in the system to provide nutritious food to all in South Africa. Working together gives us the best opportunity to ensure that the system delivers fair, equitable access to food for all.
Welcome to our FEED website, where we invite you to learn more about our perspective on South Africa's food system:
While South Africa is reportedly a food secure country in terms of productivity levels, widespread hunger and malnutrition signal deeply unequal access to food. South Africa’s food system is agro-industrial in nature and has been designed to exclude the majority from enjoying food equity, forcing a reliance on commodified foodstuffs from exclusionary value chains.
Our existing food system has been shown to be fragile and vulnerable to shocks, further entrenching inequalities and dependencies. The FEED project envisions a South African food system that is transformed to be significantly more equitable in nature, underpinned by democratic principles and practices, through collective action and inclusive innovation.
